Tenerife is an island full of dream places. Places that ordinary travellers do not usually visit since many do not appear in the main tourist proposals.
We want to show you some of the best-kept secrets of the island and we can assure you that it is worth venturing out to visit.
Coast gems of Tenerife
Tenerife is an impressive explosion of black, green and vertical land in the middle of the Atlantic. Around this island, the sea draws two very different faces:
The beautiful north, with black sand beaches from the volcano, green valleys, and traditional architecture villages, and the desert south, with white sand beaches and an infinity of tourist spots, full of beach bars, entertainment and much surfing. Places like Los Cristianos and Las Américas.
These are some of the less known spectacular beaches and preferred by locals.
1 Playa de los Patos
- Location: La Orotava. North coast of Tenerife.
Located in the spectacular valley of La Orotava, with the Teide in the background, the volcanic sand of this virgin beach grows in summer and low tide to leave one of the largest bathing areas across the north of Tenerife.
It has some access difficulties since it can only be reached on foot. However, every visitor who visits it falls in love.
2 Los Gigantes Cliff
- Location: West coast.
The ‘cliffs of the Giants’, are one of the most spectacular landscapes on the island. The imposing stone walls leave you literally speechless. It is located in the westernmost point of Tenerife.
The Guanches (the aborigines of Tenerife) considered these cliffs sacred. For them, it represented the end of the world, and once we go we really understand why.
At their feet, the seabed, about 30 meters deep, is home to a great natural wealth that attracts enthusiasts of diving and deep sea fishing.
- Location: Taganana. North-east coast.
“If I had to decide on the most beautiful beach, without a doubt, I would say Benijo with my eyes closed.” With this phrase, John Carrigan summarizes what is Benijo beach.
Located in the natural reserve of Anaga and with one of the most beautiful sunsets we know, this place will transport your mind away from problems and day to day. We can only say that it is our favorite beach in Tenerife.
4 La Tejita
- Location: El Médano. South Coast
La Tejita beach is one of the most spectacular and beautiful beaches in the south of the island. From the sand you will have stunning views of the Montaña Roja volcano, there is a path you can climb up if you feel like it. The views from the top of the volcano are worth it, you can admire the beauty of the beach at a glance.
On La Tejita there are no restaurants and cafes nearby to walk, so I recommend you bring drinks and food to spend the day.
If you are going to visit Tenerife, this is one of the must.
5 Natural Pools in Los Abrigos
- Location: Granadilla. South Coast.
The natural pools of Granadilla are a unique place in Tenerife. The capricious shapes of the volcanic rock create small puddles where you can lose yourself and disconnect from the touristic rhythm of the island. Around you, the mountainous landscape of Tenerife tries to reach the sky while the waves break against the edge of the natural pool in which you float peacefully.
The Natural pools of Los Abrigos are the perfect place to connect with the sea. They are easy to access and highly recommended to go with kids and family.
Unique Landscapes and viewpoints in Tenerife
6 Viewpoint Cueva Roja
- Location: Santa Cruz.
Mirador de Cueva Roja is a very unfrequented spot, it is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and offers a capricious and atypical red rock landscape of Tenerife.
7 Mirador de La Cruz
- Location: La Laguna.
One of the best windows from which to enjoy beautiful views of the valley that makes up San Cristobal de La Laguna, with a view of the downtown area of the city and the nuclei of Mercedes, Canteras or Jardina and hopefully and if the day is clear even of Teide.
This viewpoint is essential in your visit to Tenerife. In addition, from it, there are several simple paths to cross.
8 Mirador de Aguaide
- Location: La Laguna, north-coast.
A route through the Degollada de Las Escaleras will take us to the wonderful Viewpoint of Aguaide in Chinamada.
The Mirador de Aguaide is, without a doubt, one of the best viewpoints of Tenerife. A impressive balcony to the Atlantic Ocean on the edge of a cliff 500 meters high, from which you can enjoy magnificent views of La Punta del Hidalgo and Roque de Los Hermanos. An ideal place to enjoy the tranquility in a spectacular environment.
9 Mirador de la Degollada de Cherfe
- Location: Masca, Teno. East.
Masca is one of the very special places in Tenerife. The volcanic landscape is unique and majestic.
It is located at the top of the Macizo de Teno and from this viewpoint you can immerse yourself in this sea of ravines and vegetation.
The very unknown and special Towns
10 La Laguna
- Location: North – east. Close to Santa Cruz.
La Laguna is our favourite place to visit. It’s magical houses and historical buildings will instantly make you feel at home.
The gastronomy of La Laguna is of the best quality and there is no better place in Tenerife to enjoy the wine and food than this small town.
In addition, La Laguna has a wide cultural offer that will surprise you, there are always events that are worth our time.
11 Icod de Los Vinos
- Location: North-west.
Icod de los Vinos is a town in the north of Tenerife. It is the home of the mythical Millenary Drago, National Monument of Spain since 1917 since it is estimated that this precious tree is almost 900 years old.
In this town vineyards are cultivated where renowned wineries make wine with this unique grape variety in the world. It is an extraordinary place if you want to know the local culture and enjoy a while with wine and good company.
12 La Orotava
- Location: North.
The Orotava Valley is, with the forgiveness of others, the most beautiful place in the north of Tenerife. A beautiful valley that reaches the sea where the land has created a comfortable place of welcome for the town La Orotava.
This city breathes the essence of the Canary Islands in each of the stones of its beautiful streets. You can visit La Casa de Los Balcones, a museum of Canarian art and culture that will surprise you from the first minute.
Again, as in all places in the north of the island, you should be prepared for an exquisite meal and walks full of peace and tranquillity.
On clear days you will have a vision of the Teide in which you will believe that it protects the whole valley with its volcanic mantle, as the Guanches aborigines of this volcano, the highest peak in Spain, believed.
- Location: North-west
In the Northwest of the island, we find Garachico, called the most beautiful town in Tenerife.
It is without a doubt a special place. Few people know that more than 3 centuries ago Garachico was the main city of Tenerife, its port was the most important and its streets were full of noble houses and citizens that betrayed prosperity. Until the year 1706, in which the eruption of the volcano devastated the port.
In a walk through Garachico you will be surprised by the number of noble houses such as the House of the Marquises of Villafuerte, the House of the Marquises of Quinta Roja, the house of the Counts of La Gomera or the Hacienda El Lamero.
It’s a wonderful place you should not miss.
Tenerife is the most populated island in Spain, yet there are several hidden places which blow our minds every time go there.
Here are some of the best hidden places on the island.
14 Cueva el Tacón
- Location: Puerto Santiago. South-west.
Cueva del Tancón is a natural pool that hides secretly inside a cave located in Puerto Santiago, on the south of Tenerife. We can access it by a walk along the coast that will not leave you indifferent for its natural pools and coves, and then descend through the rocks to the cave.
It is a truly magical place, its transparent waters that are surrounded by basaltic walls next to the correct light inside the cave, make it one of the best maritime caves in the Canary Islands.
15 Punta de Teno Lighthouse
- Location: Teno. West
Teno is one of those magic spots you never get tired of visiting, and particularly this lighthouse of Teno which stands in harmony with the coast creating a very special feeling with the environment.
While your sight is in the Atlantic, you can take a majestic bath in the virgin and crystal coast of Teno.
The Punta de Teno lighthouse is one of the seven lighthouses that signal the coasts of the island of Tenerife, definitely a place to visit.
16 La cueva del viento
- Location: Icod de los Vinos, North-west.
La cueva del Viento, located in Icod de los Vinos, is one of the largest volcanic tubes in the world. This is one of the wonders offered by an island formed 100% by its volcanoes.
The volcanic tubes are the result of a magma eruption that covers the surface of Tenerife with its mantle and random shapes.
Visiting it makes you feel like you are on another planet. Perfect for the most adventurous.
17 Charco de La Mareta
- Location: Icod de los Vinos. North-west.
Again in Icod de los Vinos, we find one of the best kept secrets of the locals.
Although this puddle is difficult to access, the reward greatly exceeds the effort. You will find a magical place where you can spend the day enjoying one of the most relaxing and pleasant baths you can find.
