Where are the Canary Islands?

"How have you been to the Canaries - the Spanish islands in the Mediterranean Sea? Wrong! Often confused with the Balearic Islands, the Canaries are closer to the Moroccan coast than to mainland Spain. Lanzarote is only 250 km as the crow flies from southern Morocco. Before the Americas were discovered, they were the last western land known to Europeans and Christopher Columbus used them several times as a strategic passage before a long voyage to the new continent.
