Travel to Las Palmas of Gran Canaria in the 16 th century like a real pirate

In 1599 the Dutch pirate Pieter Van der Does attacked Las Palmas of Gran Canaria. Do you want to relive the battle and travel to the spots he visited? In this route of Independent Tourism we invite you to travel with us to the 16th century to discover the history and the legends that the city hides – accompanied by a pirate!

The senda step by step

1. Pick up at the hotel. The activity will start at 9:45am when we will collect all the guests at their hotels free of charge.

2. Pirates. The guides will explain the authentic city of the 16th century and the story of the pirate who tried to conquer Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, Pieter Van der Does.

3. First stop at the Castillo de La Luz (Castle of the Light). After collecting the group we will begin the adventure at the Castillo de la Luz. This castle was the defensive fortress of the city and was built when the island of Gran Canaria joined the Crown of Castile in the year 1494.

4. Viewpoint at Castillo de Mata (Castle of Mata). After the visit to the Castillo de la Luz we will head towards the viewpoint at the Castillo de Mata. This fortress was key in the battle against the Dutch Armada that Pieter Van der Does captained and, in fact, was one of the reasons for his defeat. From the viewpoint at the castle you can see a beautiful panorama of the whole city of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria.

5. Viewpoint at the Jardin Canario (Botanical Gardens of the Canaries). The next step in our route is to reach the viewpoint of the Jardin Canario. This botanical garden is a space that was created with the aim of protecting the native flora of the Canary Islands. In addition, it has excellent views of the upper part of the city surrounded by the native canaries.

6. Visit to Vegueta. The last stop on our tour is the visit to the old town of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria: Vegueta. There, we will travel through historic sites such as the Plaza de Santa Ana and its cathedral-basilica where we can enjoy the distinctive Canarian architecture. In addition, we will also visit the Casa de Colón, one of the most emblematic buildings in the city whose interior is dedicated to the research and telling of the history of the Canary Islands and its relationship with the Americas. One part of this museum was the former governors house who Christopher Columbus visited before starting his voyage to America.

7. The end of the route. The activity will end at approximately 3:30pm with the return of the guests to their hotels.
